Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I CHOOSE A WIG THAT'S RIGHT FOR ME?

The principles are the same as they would be when choosing your own hair style. Pick a style that you find to be comfortable. Think of the image you want to project. If you want to disguise large features or a big face, a longer style will often help. Shorter styles will usually suit the more mature lady.

Colour choice is a very personal matter, but it often helps to select something similar to your own natural colour. Dark colours will generally harden your looks, while lighter ones will soften them.

You also need to decide whether you want a human hair wig or a synthetic one. Human hair wigs are usually more expensive, but they can be treated much like your own hair — they can be washed, curled and coloured. You can also use heated curling appliances, which MUST NOT be used with synthetic hair. Synthetic wigs are less expensive and need very little maintenance or styling — they hold their style through wash after wash.

HOW DO I MAKE SURE IT FITS PROPERLY?

This is probably the most important factor in choosing your wig. It is a good idea to try on different wigs to see how comfortable they feel. Measure the circumference of your head, preferably using a tape-measure made of fabric: starting at the front hair-line, hold the beginning of the tape measure in place, and wrap the tape right around your head, back to the front hair-line. At the back of your head, the tape should sit right at the fold of the neck and head area (about an inch below the occipital bone) and it should sit behind your ears, not over them. the reading on the tape where it meets the end is your head size.

There are three wig sizes:.

Most wigs are fitted with adjustable tapes that help in fine tuning the fit, but you must have the right size to begin with.

WEARING THE WIG

Gently shake your wig to separate the hairs. Place on your head, and then use your fingertips or a styling comb to add the final touches. Control any flyaway strands by misting with water.

WHAT DO I DO AFTER WEARING IT?

To remove tangles, mist with water and gently comb the tangles away using a wide-toothed comb or your fingers, working from the ends to the top of the tangle. Squeeze the damp ends into your fist, to retain the original curl.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY WIG?

Synthetic Hair Wigs

Use only shampoo which is formulated specifically for synthetic hair, and only cold water. Mix a capful of shampoo with cold water in a sink or basin. Immerse the wig, gently agitate it, and leave to soak for five minutes. While it is still in the water, finger-pick or use a wide-toothed comb to gently tease out any tangles, starting from the ends and working to the top. Rinse the wig gently but thoroughly in cold water. Wrap it in a towel and pat gently to remove most of the excess moisture.
DO NOT RUB, TWIST OR WRING.
It is a good idea to use a revitalising spray lightly over the damp wig and comb it through - again starting at the ends and working to the top. Squeeze the damp ends into your fist to retain the original curl. Allow the wig to dry completely before wearing it again - preferably on a wig-stand, but if you do not have one, you can dry it flat on a towel.

Human Hair Wigs

You can treat these much as you treat your own hair, and, as with your own hair, they will need to be styled after washing. You can use heated hair appliances, but ONLY on human hair wigs.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CARING FOR MY WIG?

As with other fibres, your wig will absorb odours, and so you should not store it with other materials which have strong smells. Your wig is best stored on a wig-stand, or folded inside-out. Your wig will look truly dreadful if you neglect it and just throw it into a drawer, but if you treat it gently and carefully it will look great for wear after wear. The best plan is to have one to wash and one to wear, and perhaps another to wear when you spend the day doing housework or gardening.
